From arms control to abortion rights and vaccine warrants, no underlying purpose is being met, no political goal is really being met. The sole purpose is to irritate an increasingly harsh left base and cause conservatives to oppose these policies so that liberals can paint them ogres.
One thing would be for the progressive agenda of the government to be designed to produce the results it promised, but often the only result that is produced is outrage.
Think of gun control. While the Liberal Party’s election platform limited itself to promising to fund provinces that wanted to introduce their own handgun bans, last week the government announced a nationwide “freeze” on the sale or purchase. of weapons.

The Prime Minister was clearly trying to take advantage of the horror that Canadians feel about mass shootings, especially those involving so many children.
I do not accept the argument that tragedies are not the time to talk about politics. It is not inherently exploitative to defend gun control after a tragedy, but to prevent it from deviating exclusively to shameless partisanship, one should at least try to address the challenge of keeping guns out of the hands of potential shooters.
As for Canada, much of that work has already been done. For starters, the UValde shooter did not use a pistol, he used an AR-15 rifle, a kind of firearm already banned in this country. Gun violence is, in fact, a growing problem in Canadian cities, but it is motivated by, as the police regularly tell you, smuggling weapons across the border.
