Today we got a little more information about the PlayStation VR2, Sony’s next foray into the world of virtual reality.
A new PlayStation blog has detailed the user experience features available at launch.
These include a very useful transparent view and a customizable play area set up, among others.

Transparent Vision is, as you may have guessed, the ability to “see your surroundings while wearing the headset”. Which, if you’re like me, will come in handy.
“Thanks to PS VR2’s embedded front-facing cameras, users can press the function button on the headset or use the card in the control center to switch between viewing the environment or viewing content on PS VR2,” Sony explained.
Meanwhile, the customizable play area I mentioned above will mean you can scan your room with the PS VR2’s Sense controllers and its embedded cameras. From there, you’ll be able to customize the play area to “fit your play style and room environment” (again, something I’d find very useful, it’s almost as if Sony has mind your players here!).
Other additions include a new broadcast feature, so there’s something for Ian, and the option to choose between VR or Cinematic mode.
The VR mode will give players the opportunity to enjoy “virtual reality game content in a 360 view in a virtual environment.” It will be displayed in 4000×2040 HDR video format (which is, in Sony’s words, “2000×2040 per eye”) at a frame rate of 90Hz/120Hz.
Cinema mode, meanwhile, will mean players will be able to “view the PS5 system and user interface and all non-VR game and media content on a virtual cinema screen.” This content will be displayed in 1920×1080 HDR video format with 24/60 Hz and a frame rate of 120 Hz.
There’s still no word on a release date for the PS VR2, although a set has been spotted in the wild, but Sony has promised we’ll hear more about it “soon.”
In addition, Tobii has been confirmed as the eye-tracking technology supplier for the new kit.
