Cloudflare disruption breaks large areas of the Internet

Cloudflare is experiencing an outage, according to its status page. Cloudflare technology is powering many other sites and services over the Internet, and the outage seems to be affecting a number of different sites, including Discord, Shopify, Grindr, Fitbit and Peleton, according to Downdetector. Problems seem to have started around 2:30 AM ET. As of 3:20 AM ET, Cloudflare reports that “a solution is being implemented.”

Problems are more problematic if you are a user of the Cloudflare DNS lookup service. Several Virgin staff members found that they were unable to access any websites during the outage as a result of using Cloudflare’s DNS 1.1.1.1 service. Fortunately, the solution here is simple: change your DNS settings. I found that reusing my ISP’s default DNS settings solved most of my problems.

The problem has been identified and a solution is being implemented.

Cloudflare has experienced similar problems in the past, such as July and August 2020. It’s not a good idea for a company to advertise its services as a way to reduce downtime.
