Carlton got a chance to level the score as Jack Silvagni suddenly found himself free with only the ‘keeper to beat, but the finishing shot hit the bar.

Sam Walsh, Sam Docherty, George Hewett and Adam Cerra had 30 or more aliens, but it was not enough to beat Collingwood, who had solid contributions at all levels.

With the Blues coming together in the final quarter, Collingwood’s Mason Cox picked a good time to get up and throw his first goal of the season to keep the Magpies ahead.

Charlie Curnow scored four goals for Carlton, but the Magpies won 79 (11.13) to 75 (11.9) to brag about their traditional rivals.

The win brings Collingwood to 10th place on the ladder, while the Blues fall to fifth as the top eight become more congested.

Carlton’s defeat was aggravated by key defender Jacob Weitering who suffered a serious shoulder injury and was substituted offside in the first quarter.

Blues coach Michael Voss said Weitering’s injury was “closer to the main end” of the spectrum and he would see a surgeon this week.

Weitering is ready for an extended period on the sidelines, while Carlton have already had to fight without key striker Harry McKay and ruckman Marc Pittonet for periods this season.
