Colorado’s “powerful” downpour bringing heavy rain and wind south of Manitoba

Those living in southern Manitoba should prepare for a heavy downpour and strong winds early in the week.

On Monday morning, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for parts of southern Manitoba, saying a “powerful” downpour from Colorado is expected to bring more rain to the region.

The weather agency noted that the first round of showers and storms will go from the south on Monday afternoon. However, several more showers are expected before the system goes out on Tuesday evening.

Environment Canada predicts a total of 30 to 50 mm of rainfall, but the exact amounts and timing are still uncertain due to the development of storms on both sides of the international border. The weather agency added that heavy rains with localized amounts exceeding 50 mm are possible.

Manitobans are reminded that showers can cause sudden flooding and water accumulations on the roads. Residents are asked to watch for washes near the river, streams and sewers.

WIND NOTICES

Environment Canada has also issued a wind warning in parts of the province, such as Brandon, Dauphin and Virden.

The weather agency warns that due to the Colorado downpour, northerly winds will intensify Monday afternoon and reach 60 to 90 km / h in the evening. Strong winds will continue through the night until Tuesday morning, but will end on Tuesday afternoon.

Manitobans are warned that winds can cause damage to buildings. Loose objects can be blown away by wind and cause damage or injury.

Strong winds can also cause power outages and falling tree branches. Drivers may experience dangerous road conditions due to strong crosswinds.
