When the summer heat finally arrives, the provincial government is tightening combustion restrictions.

Starting Friday at noon, Category 2 open fires will be banned throughout the southern interior of BC, including the Kamloops and Southeast fire centers. Bonfires are still allowed.

Prohibited activities include:

  • Category 2 open fires: one to two piles in flames not more than two meters high by three meters wide or stubble or grass burning on an area of ​​less than 0.2 hectares.
  • Fireworks, sky lanterns, explosive binary targets, air curtain burners
  • Burn barrels or cages of any size or description, except when used for a campfire.

Bonfires half a meter high by half a meter wide or less are not prohibited and the ban does not apply to stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

Category 3 open fires have been banned in the region since June 30, 2022.

All such prohibitions apply to public and private lands, unless otherwise specified.

Anyone with an open fire that has been banned could receive a $ 1,150 fine, could be asked to pay an administrative penalty of $ 10,000 or, if convicted in court, a fine of up to $ 100,000. / or sentenced to one year in prison. If the fire contributes to a forest fire, the person responsible could be ordered to pay all extinction costs.
