Voting closed in the first vote of Conservative MPs to select a successor to Boris Johnson.
The eight candidates – Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat, Kemi Badenoch, Penny Mordaunt, Jeremy Hunt, Nadhim Zahawi and Suella Braverman – were fighting for the support of at least 30 MPs to pass the first round of voting, which finished. at 3:30 p.m. Results are expected at 5 p.m.
Earlier, the prime minister said he would leave office “with his head held high” in a fierce showdown with Sir Keir Starmer in the Commons.

It was driven by a poll that suggested she would win a second round to become the next Conservative leader and prime minister if she reaches the last two candidates.
YouGov’s quick poll of 876 party members, who will decide between the last two candidates to replace Mr Johnson, showed Mordaunt 27%.
Second place went to Ms. Badenoch with 15%, followed by Mr. Sunak and Mrs. Truss with 13%.

Key appointments in the Conservative Leadership Contest
Boris Johnson’s successor will be announced on September 5 with Conservative MPs to begin the voting process for a new leader on Wednesday.
Here is the calendar for the leadership contest.
– Wednesday, July 13: First vote. Any candidate who fails to get at least 30 votes is expected to drop out.
– Thursday, July 14: Second vote. A second ballot with more votes next week will follow on Thursday until the list of candidates is reduced to two finals, which will then go to a postal vote of party members.
– Friday 15 July: First debate. Channel 4 will hold the first Conservative-led television debate with the remaining candidates at 7 p.m.
– Sunday 17 July: Second debate. ITV will host a television debate at 7 p.m.
– Monday 18 July: Third debate. Sky News plans to host another debate the following night.
– Friday, July 22 onwards: Hustings will be held across the country over the summer to help party members decide their election for the new Conservative leader.
– Monday 5 September: new Conservative leader announced. The new Prime Minister will be announced on 5 September when MPs return to Westminster after the summer holidays.

Penny Mordaunt is the “clearly favorite” to replace Boris Johnson as the next leader of the Conservative Party, according to William Hill.
The bookmaker has a 4/6 chance that the trade minister will win the Conservative leadership contest.
Polls suggest Chancellor Rishi Sunak is the second most popular candidate, with 10/3, while Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has a 7/2 chance of winning.
William Hill spokesman Tony Kenny said: “After the results of the poll revealed that Penny Mordaunt is the clear favorite among Conservative Party members to replace Boris Johnson, bettors have lined up to support the minister. of State of Commerce.

Truss cast votes
