North Queensland have picked up their seventh away win of the season to stay in second place on the Telstra Premiership ladder after a 34-8 win over the Dragons on Sunday.
It was the first time in almost 20 years that the Cowboys beat the Dragons in Kogarah with forwards Jason Taumalolo and Jeremiah Nanai prominent in the win.
The visitors held a 10-8 lead before Taumalolo sent Griffin Neame under the posts in the 58th minute to stretch the visitors’ lead to eight.
Two more tries for Nanai and Scott Drinkwater, who finished with doubles, secured their 14th win of the year.
Earlier, back-to-back tries from Drinkwater and Kyle Feldt in the first half established an eight-point lead before the Dragons hit back through Jack de Belin to level the game after 40 minutes.

Drinking water cuts like an arrow
what they said
“I really liked it, when we had the ball and when we didn’t. I challenged the guys to play our way and they did tonight. I’ve learned a little bit about our team over the last 6-10 weeks because of it’s about the kind of language we use. We have a very talented and exciting group. We play our best when we move the ball, but we have to be clear about what that looks like.” – Todd Payten, coach of the Cowboys.
“I thought even with 15 to play at 16-8 we had a chance to come back. We didn’t get much out of our first half. We had a chance to be ahead at halftime and they got a couple. That was the story of the night, then they got three in the last 15 minutes defensively.” – Anthony Griffin, Dragons coach.
