Cristiano Ronaldo has received compassionate permission from Manchester United as his future at Old Trafford is at stake.

Ronaldo did not show up on Monday for pre-season training for “family reasons” which the club has accepted, and remains in Lisbon.

Sources said the circumstances surrounding Ronaldo’s absence mean that United do not know when the 37-year-old will return, or even whether he will tour Thailand and Australia with the rest of the squad on Friday.

United insist Ronaldo is not for sale, but Chelsea and Napoli have expressed interest in their agent Jorge Mendes after talks.

Chelsea’s new owner Todd Boehly is understood to be considering an offer as he seeks a replacement for £ 97.5m failure Romelu Lukaku, although head coach Thomas Tuchel is believed to have reservations about Ronaldo.

There was better news for United on Monday after it was learned that former Tottenham and Inter Milan star Christian Eriksen has agreed to join the club as a free agent on a three-year contract.

United are expected to sign Eriksen and Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia for £ 12.9 million before touring, and to continue talks over Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and Argentine midfielder Ajax. Lisandro Martinez.
