The age of President Joe Biden is beginning to weigh on the minds of more Democrats as the midterm and 2024 elections approach.
Democrats like David Axelrod, chief strategist of President Barack Obama, are sounding the alarm about what could happen if Biden, 79, chooses to run for president again in 2024. Biden is already facing strong criticism for mistakes and misstatements that many attribute to age, and he would be 86 at the end of a second trimester.
“The presidency is a monstrously imposing job, and the stark reality is that the president would be closer to the ’90s than the’ 80s at the end of a second term, and that would be a major problem,” Axelrod told the New York Times.
Behind Axelrod are a large number of Democrats grateful for Biden’s defeat of former President Donald Trump in 2020, but they want a younger leadership in 2024.

“Democrats need fresh, bold leadership for the 2024 presidential race. That can’t be Biden.”
“I need an equivalent of Ron DeSantis, a Democrat, but not a 70- or 80-year-old, a younger person,” Alex Wyshyvanuk, 33, told NYT. “Someone who knows what worked for you in 1980 won’t work for you in 2022 or 2024.”
DeSantis, the Republican governor of Florida, is 43 years old.
Biden’s poll numbers don’t help either, as the president’s approval rating continues to hit new lows.
Some Democratic Party stars already appear to be breaking with Biden before mid-term and in 2024. New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez declined to say she would vote for the president in 2024 on Sunday.
“You know, if the president decides to run again in 2024, I mean, first of all, I’m focused on winning that majority right now and preserving the majority this year in 2022,” Ocasio-Cortez told CNN. “So we’ll cross that bridge when we get there … I think if the president has a vision and that’s something, no doubt we’re all willing to entertain and examine when the time comes.”

CNN host Dana Bash intervened and said, “This is not a yes.”
“You know, I think we should support it when we get there,” Ocasio-Cortez replied. “I think the president has been doing a really good job so far. And, you know, should he run again? I think I … you know, I think … we’ll take a look.”
