Diablo Immortal, Blizzard’s free version of its long-running dungeon tracking series, has begun its global rollout and is now available for download on iOS and Android devices in certain territories.
First announced at BlizzCon in 2018 – where it was less than well received by attendees – Diablo Immortal takes place between Diablo 2 and 3 events, adapting the classic dungeon tracking formula of its predecessors for devices mobile, which, among other things, means a free monetization model based on in-app purchases.
Starting in the city of Westmarch, players can take one of six classes (barbarian, magician, monk, Croatian, necromancer, or demon hunter) and travel to explore eight areas with other adventurers. Blizzard and co-developer NetEase have previously said that additional zones, stories, loot and classes will be added over time.
Diablo Immortal – Release date trailer announcement and PC.
Diablo Immortal was originally scheduled to arrive on June 2, but, as announced over the weekend, Blizzard has advanced its mobile release a bit to “ensure a hassle-free release.” As such, the game is now available through Google Play and the iOS App Store, but the open beta of PC will not arrive until tomorrow.
Launch plans, however, differ by territory. Activision, for example, has canceled the launch of Diablo Immortal in Belgium and the Netherlands due to countries’ laws on loot boxes. In addition, Asia Pacific regions such as Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macao, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand will not see the game until June 22.
Diablo Immortal is Blizzard’s first new game in just over six years, following the 2016 release of the original Overwatch. It is also the first new game the developer has released since it became the focus of an ongoing lawsuit filed by the state of California last July that called the study a “breeding ground for harassment and discrimination against women “.
