Digital Extremes has announced during TennoCon 2022 that it has started developing a completely new game. Titled Soulframe, the team led by former Warframe senior staff Jeff Ross and Steve Sinclair, it’s a fantastic title, moving away from the sci-fi environment Warframe has established over the past seven years.
In her place, Rebecca Ford will hold the position of Chief Creative Director of Warframe. In an interview with us shortly before TennoCon, he told us about the change, as well as how he has been at the helm of the team in secret for the past six months.

“It’s a lot. It’s overwhelming, it’s exciting. It’s basically something I didn’t know I wanted to do. But now that I’ve been doing it for six months, I feel like I can take good care of Warframe. We are in this very strange situation right now that no one knows, even though it has been six months. The Digital Extremes team wanted me to know they wanted to do it. They didn’t want to throw me in the wolf’s frame, so to speak, and they didn’t give me a chance to say ‘go, that’s not what I expected. This is not for me. “
Rebecca Ford will officially take the reins of Warframe with the announcement of Soulframe. In a press release sent after the announcement, Soulframe creative director Geoff Crookes writes, “With the themed elements and construction of the Soulframe world, we’re really looking to get back to our childhood favorites and get inspired by the elaborate fantastic worlds we fell in love with. Our growth. Our team is very interested in this clashing idea of nature and humanity and we will explore many of these topics through our own lens as we play with restoration ideas. and exploration “.
In addition to the news of a new game being created internally, Digital Extremes also announced that it will begin independent publishing support with Airship Syndicate, creators of Darksiders, Genesis and most recently, Ruined King: A League of Legends Story. The Airship team also offered a teaser of their upcoming MMO project during TennoCon as part of the announcement, embedded below.

According to Ford, Digital Extremes is open to helping in the creation of any game genre, not just MMOs like Warframe, Soulframe and the upcoming Airship Syndicate title. “Honestly, they’re just promising projects and a studio that is proud of their vision and wants to do it the right way.”
For those who are up to date with the history of Digital Extremes, this is certainly a reversal of destinies compared to the position in which they found themselves with the release of Warframe in 2013. At the time, the game was a last-ditch attempt. save the studio (recorded brilliantly). in the documentary No Clip in the studio). Fortunately, it seems that Warframe’s success has put the studio in a position to branch out into other projects.
“Honestly, it’s almost more pressure, because now you have a success story to compare yourself to,” Ford says. “It’s another taste of pressure. It’s like getting off the roller coaster and skydiving. Right now we have people saying goodbye to Warframe. Like Steve, he’s worked here for 25 years! Plus, in a lot of ways, so did Scott and Geoff. Maybe they thought Warframe was the last thing they were going to do, and they could walk away and say we did it, we did what we wanted to do. “
“But now they have another chance, and DE has a chance to get into the fantasy genre. So it’s really more that we can do fantasy, and how we use the lessons learned from Warframe with their experience to apply it to “A different genre? They were comfortable enough with the idea of directing Warframe with the team. You know, we have Pablo, and Megan, and a lot of other people behind the scenes. Some people know that, some don’t, and they trust us. So I trust them to do the fantasy well, and they trust us to keep Warframe and do a good job and make them feel proud. “
