The Isle of Man TT races of 2022 claimed third life on Monday when Northern Irishman Davy Morgan died in an accident during the event’s first Supersport race.
Organizers said the 52-year-old veteran, who made his 80th start in TT since his debut in 2002, suffered a fatal accident on the third and final lap of the mountain’s stretch of the route.
A statement issued by race organizers said it was “with a heavy heart” that they confirmed Morgan’s death. “The Isle of Man TT races convey their deepest condolences to Davy’s partner, Trudy, her family, loved ones and friends.”
For almost 30 years, Morgan was a regular in the racing paddocks of Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Macau Grand Prix. He won a 250cc race in the North West 200 in 2005 and two wins in the same class at the Ulster Grand Prix in 2012 and 2017.
Last Saturday, French passenger Olivier Lavorel, 35, and British Supersport driver Mark Purslow, 29, died on Saturday. Purslow suffered a fatal crash in the TT rating after an accident at Ballagarey.
Lavorel competed for the first time in TT racing as a passenger for his compatriot César Chanel, who was taken to Liverpool Hospital in critical condition after the accident at Ago’s Leap.
The races around the island in the Irish Sea have been held since 1907 and are among the most dangerous in motorsport. So far there have been 263 fatalities in the TT, Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT races held on the island’s public roads.
TT races are being held again this year after a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the longest break for the event since World War II.
