A new study finds that eating highly processed foods could be linked to a faster rate of cognitive decline. Heavily processed foods like ready meals, microwave frozen meals and instant noodles may be quick and easy to make, but according to the results of the recent study, it might be worth spending the extra time in the kitchen.
The results of the study were presented Monday at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in San Diego and examined the diets and cognition of more than 10,000 middle-aged and older adults in Brazil. The study looked at participants for up to 10 years and included both men and women.
The study found that adults who ate the most processed foods had a 25% faster decline in their “executive function,” which is their ability to plan, execute and act, than those who ate the least foods processed

In another recent study published by the American Academy of Neurology in Science News, it found that people who consume large amounts of ultra-processed foods have a higher risk of developing dementia.
Highly processed foods are foods that contain few whole ingredients and often contain flavors, colors, or other additives. This includes white bread, cookies, crackers, ice cream, candy, hot dogs, sugary drinks, fried snacks, and other processed meats.

“No matter how many calories, no matter how much healthy food you try to eat, ultra-processed food is not good for your cognition,” said study author Claudia Suemoto.
