Energy could be rationed “for years”

Europe faces years of energy rationing without Russian gas, Shell’s boss has warned. Ben van Beurden said it was a “fantasy” to think Europe’s energy crisis would be resolved soon and warned that if Moscow cut off all supplies, life would be “very hard”.

“I don’t think this crisis is limited to just one winter,” the CEO of Europe’s largest oil and gas group said yesterday.

Van Beurden said that “we may have a series of winters where we have to somehow find solutions through efficiency savings, through rationing and through very quickly creating alternatives,” such as gas imports from other places and the development of non-gas energy sources.

Ben Van Beurden, CEO of Shell, says he does not believe the crisis will be limited to one winter.
