Looking ahead to the match, the Hungarians had not beaten England in their last 15 attempts since the 1962 World Cup, but won a famous victory at the Puskas Arena.
Dominik Szoboszlai scored the only goal of the match, throwing a penalty in the second half after Reece James was declared to have overthrown Adam Nagy.
England struggled all night to get going and Hungary were a worthy winner in the end, with the set of Gareth Southgate now needing to recover before a trip to Germany on Tuesday.

Jordan Pickford 6
He was the busier of the two goalkeepers and was almost trapped off his line in the first half. He could not get close to Szoboszlai’s excellent penalty.
Kyle Walker 7
He had a good game in the last three and you can see why Southgate likes to use him in this role. It offers rhythm and experience. The defense seemed weaker when he left after the scheduled time.
Conor Coady 6
He had a rare chance to start in the heart of the defense and was solid enough. He was on the verge of scoring a late goal with a header from a free kick.
Harry Maguire 5
After a difficult season, this was a good performance by the Manchester United captain. It started strong, but went down towards the end.
Trent Alexander-Arnold 6
He hit a couple of balls diagonally to Justin on the other side, who was often England’s best attacking weapon in the first half. He has related well to Bowen.
Declan Rice 6
It has been tough for West Ham this season, but it has been a tough game here. Couldn’t get things started in the middle of the park.
Jude Bellingham 6
He’s only 18 yet and it really looks like Southgate should keep up with him going forward. He showed a burst of brilliance and was one of those who tried to rally England to find a draw.
James Justin 6
It only lasted 45 minutes at the end and he seemed to be struggling from the middle of the first half. He had some brilliant moments and was solid in his debut.
Jarrod Bowen 7
One of the best players in England on a disappointing night, full of running and causing trouble at first. He has made his own hopes of keeping the spot on the roster without any harm.
Harry Kane 5
An uncommon night for the captain, who is chasing Wayne Rooney’s goal record. He had an early vision of the goal, but other than that he was calm. He missed a great opportunity to square the ball to Grealish while England looked for a draw.
Mont Mason 6
The odd good skill moment in the first 15 minutes or so, but he didn’t get as involved as he would have liked. Take off just after the time mark.
Substitutions
Bukayo Saka (Justin 45 ‘) 6
At the break he started well, with a good stop by the Hungarian goalkeeper. It could start in Germany on Tuesday.
Reece James (Alexander-Arnold 62 ‘) 5
He was sent off for a foul. It seemed like a tough call, but the VAR did not intervene.
Jack Grealish (Mount 62 ‘) 6
Brilliant and tried to bring the ball to open Hungary. He suspects that he could start in Germany with England with little creativity.
John Stones (Walker 62 ‘) 5
At the heart of the defense and England looked messy during their stay on the pitch.
Calvin Phillips (Coady 78 ‘) N / A
Unused subs: Ramsdale, Pope, Trippier, Ward-Prowse, Gallagher, Sterling, Abraham.
