Exclusive: EU agreement on a single mobile charging port is likely to be a setback for Apple on June 7

BRUSSELS, June 3 (Reuters) – EU countries and EU lawmakers agree on a common charging port for mobile phones, tablets and headphones on June 7 when they meet to discuss a proposal that has been heavily criticized for Apple (AAPL.O). ), said people familiar with the subject.

The European Commission first proposed a single mobile charging port more than a decade ago after iPhone and Android users complained about having to use different chargers for their phones.

The first is charged with a Lightning cable while Android-based devices are powered by USB-C connectors.

Next Tuesday will be the second and probably last between EU countries and EU lawmakers on the issue, an indication of a strong push to reach an agreement, people said.

Outstanding issues include expanding the scope of the proposal to laptops, a key demand from EU lawmakers that is likely to affect Samsung (005930.KS) and Huawei. [RIC:RIC:HWT.UL] and other device makers, people said.

EU lawmakers also want to include harmonized wireless charging systems by 2025, while EU countries and the Commission want a longer start-up period for technical reasons.

Apple was not immediately available for comment. He has previously said that the misuse of old international standards stifles innovation and that forcing users to switch to new chargers could create a mountain of e-waste.
