Golden-Field RCMP have confirmed that two people have died following a head-on collision on Highway 1 Sunday morning.
At 6:50 a.m. Sunday, Golden-Field RCMP, Highway Patrol and BC Emergency Services responded to a multi-vehicle crash involving two semi-trucks on the highway 1 at the west gate of Yoho National Park, about 35 km east of Golden.
Upon arrival, the occupants of the two semi trucks involved were determined to be deceased.
Police confirm that one semi was transporting livestock and another was transporting wood.
While the investigation is still ongoing, it appears that one of the trucks crossed into oncoming traffic and caused a head-on collision.
“The deceased parties have not yet been identified, and the BC Coroner’s Service has conducted the investigation, with assistance from the Golden-Field RCMP and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service,” said Cst./Gen. Kat Robinson.
Freeway 1 will remain closed overnight and into Monday as the investigation continues.
“There is an alternate route on Hwy 95 and Hwy 93 at this time. Check Drive BC for updates,” Cst. Robinson added
Anyone with information about this collision, including any dash cam video, is asked to contact the Golden-Field RCMP at 250-344-2221.

Drivers traveling between BC and Alberta on Sunday and early Monday will need to find an alternate route on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Highway 1 is closed after a crash between Golden and Lake Louise. A post on the Skilled Truckers Canada Facebook group suggests it was a head-on collision between two semis. One of the trucks may have been transporting cattle.
DriveBC says the freeway is closed in both directions east of Golden. Estimated reopening time for Hwy 1 is Monday at 3:00 PM MDT.

The alternate route is Highway 95 and Highway 93 through Radium, but that can add up to two hours to the trip.
