Finally, an easier way to use Google Password Manager on Android

Google Password Manager is a comprehensive password management service for your Google Account, but managing your manager can be a bit tricky. It doesn’t have any specific apps or extensions (like password managers like 1Password or Bitwarden usually do), but it’s deeply interwoven with Google products.

The passwords you save in Google Chrome are entered. The same goes for passwords saved on your Android, where Google Password Manager plays the most important role, as it allows you to automatically save and fill in Chrome passwords on your phone.

Google Password Manager can be managed through a website where you can view, copy, or edit your logins, and a widget is available on Android using Google Play services. The applet is much better than the website, at least, because it integrates directly with native Android features like biometric unlock, which means you don’t have to sign in to your Google Account every time to copy passwords. Just a facial scan or a fingerprint will do the trick.

The problem? Accessing the Password Manager is not always easy. Even if you ask Google Assistant for help, it will open the website instead of the applet. There is an indirect way to get there using the “Settings” app: you need to go to Privacy> AutoFill from Google> Passwords. That’s four extra touches.

With a new update to the Google Play system, there’s now an easier way to open the Password Manager app on Android smartphones and tablets. First, open the Play Store app and make sure your Google Play services are up to date (you should have version 22.18 or later).

Then go to Settings> Privacy> Google Autofill Service> Passwords to open the password manager. You will now see a new option on this page. Enable the “Add a shortcut to the home screen” option. This will open a new menu and you can drag the shortcut anywhere on the lock screen.

Once this is done, you can tap the “Passwords” shortcut at any time to open the Password Manager, giving you instant access to all your saved logins.
