Squid Game will officially return to Netflix for the second season. According to a message from director Hwang Dong-hyuk, the second season will see the return of Gi-hun and the mysterious Front Man. The note also says that “the man in the dress with ddakji could return” and that we will also introduce Cheol-su, Young-hee’s boyfriend.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But ‘Squid Game’ took 12 days to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” writes Hwang. “As a writer, director and producer of ‘Squid Game’, a big shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show … Join us once again for a new round. “
The renewal comes despite the change in Netflix’s fortune since the show originally debuted. Although Squid Game has been a huge worldwide success, in April Netflix recorded its first drop in subscribers in 10 years. This was quickly followed by layoffs and a reported tightening of production budgets at virtually all levels. Netflix is also focusing on limiting password sharing and has told employees it will launch the broadcast with advertising later this year.
The Korean series became the largest Netflix series at its release. Last year, Hwang said he was in the “planning process” to develop the second season, while Netflix co-director Ted Sarandos said, “The Squid Game universe has just begun.” In other words, we all knew pretty much the second season was coming, but now it’s official.
It’s unclear when exactly the second season will debut, or if it’s still over. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hwang said at the point of sale that he could see the next season of Squid Game coming out in late 2023 or 2024, and will feature more evil games. So if you’ve been waiting to see what kind of trouble Gi-hun will get into, you might have to wait a year or two.
