A fire service spokesman said the fire measured about 100m by 300m in a field.

Alex Smith, station manager at Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Initially two appliances were called in. On arrival they realized the fire could spread so they put four bombs and they asked for a water carrier.

“Crews worked hard to prevent the spread to the standing crop and, working with the owner and farmer, prevented the spread. Unfortunately, there was a slight spread to a 1,400-tonne mud pile. The incident it’s under control now.”

The stop message was sent at 6:29 p.m.

It is the latest bushfire to break out in Suffolk in recent weeks, with the fire service declaring it a major incident last Tuesday after being reported almost 50 times.

Suffolk firefighters were called to fires in Burgate and Knodishall fields on Sunday.
