The fire on Friday afternoon, which destroyed two sets of duplexes, was fueled by strong winds. On Friday evening, four homes were considered uninhabitable and another three homes were damaged by heat exposure. Eight residents have been displaced.

Investigators are working to identify the cause of the fire, which was not considered suspicious, and no one was injured.

“We were very concerned about the houses exposed to the wind, so our range was a little bigger,” said Battalion Chief Alistair Robin. “We were looking at houses across the street and several houses on either side just to make sure there were no embers being thrown into the courtyards.”

Firefighters used large streams of water to help control the fire and to prevent the spread of debris and embers driven by the wind.

Police blocked entrances to Evansglen Close NW and asked people to avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles to enter the site.

We are assisting with traffic control in the Evansglen Close NW area as the Calgary Fire Department manages a fire. We urge citizens to avoid the area, as there are multiple traffic cuts affected along Symons Valley Pkwy., Evanston Way and Evanston Dr. #yycroads

St. Josephine Bakhita, who supports the houses involved, was evacuated as a precaution, although there was no damage to the school or its property. Other homes in the area were also evacuated for security reasons.

Firefighters will remain on site throughout the night to make sure there are no outbreaks.

Investigators are requesting that people send images, videos or information about the fire, especially before firefighters arrive, to piofire@calgary.ca.
