Firefighters extinguish 2-alarm fire in southwest Calgary Firefighters extinguish 2-alarm fire in southwest Calgary

Fire crews say working smoke alarms have been credited with saving residents of a southwest Calgary home after a fire broke out early Sunday.

Officials say firefighters were called to a home in the 200 block of Cougarstone Gardens SW at approximately 3:10 a.m.

Upon arrival, they found a two-story house emitting smoke and flames from the roof.

A second alarm was called to bring additional crews to the area, officials said.

“Fire crews began an aggressive attack on the home of origin while placing hose lines to help stop the spread of the fire to the exposed homes. As the fire was primarily in the roof structure, installed an aerial water tower to control the fire and the spread of the fire,” the CFD said in a statement.

The fire was quickly brought under control and a search determined that a single resident inside the home of origin managed to escape safely, while three people from a neighboring home also got out safely.

The EMS went to the scene, but there were no injuries.

Firefighters say the resident of the home of origin told them they were alerted to the situation by a smoke alarm, which underscores the importance of such devices, according to the CFD.

“Smoke alarms that work help save lives. Smoke alarms should be installed, maintained and tested regularly on all levels of your home.”

A fire investigator is working to determine the cause of the fire and residents are expected to be evacuated while repairs are made to the home.
