First case of smallpox in monkeys detected in Queensland

Health authorities on Monday detected the first confirmed case of monkeypox in Queensland.

The risk to public health is considered very low.

Currently, the positive case is isolated at home in Brisbane under virtual control.

The contract is now being tracked to identify anyone who may have been in contact with the positive case. Possible close contacts will be contacted directly.

Monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious viral disease that is transmitted from person to person through close contact.

Cases of monkeypox are commonly reported in the Queensland Health Register of Notifiable Conditions.

You can find more information about monkeypox on the Queensland Health website.
