Five people were shot dead on the Coney Island waterfront in the early hours of Sunday, including a 31-year-old man who was in critical condition after receiving a gunshot wound to the back, police said.
The victims were among eight people shot in the city early in the morning, including a woman who appeared to be an innocent bystander, police said.
The bullets flew to the Boardwalk and West 21st Street, where a “large group” of people were gathering around 2 a.m., a police spokeswoman said.
Two women, one 27 and one 26, were shot in the left leg and taken to Lutheran Hospital. A 36-year-old man was shot in the chin and taken to the same hospital in stable condition.
A 31-year-old man was shot in the back and a 19-year-old in the leg. Both took private media to NYU’s Langone Hospital, where the elderly man was in critical condition.

No description of the shooter was given, police said. More than two dozen bullets were found at the scene.
Meanwhile, a 31-year-old woman was shot in the arm while walking down a Brooklyn street around 3:26 a.m., police said.
The woman was walking down Emmons Avenue and Nostrand Avenue when a bullet hit her.

“She appeared to be walking and was beaten,” a police source said, adding that the woman appeared to be an unwanted target.
Two more men were shot during a dispute outside a Bronx nightclub around 2 p.m.
A 21-year-old man was shot in the hip and a 26-year-old in the stomach at the Last Stop Bar & Grill on White Plains Road, police said. Both went to hospitals in stable condition.

Two suspects fled the scene on foot. It was unclear what the dispute was about, police said.
