Florida 5th grader arrested for threatening to shoot

A fifth-grade student in Florida was arrested Saturday for threatening mass shooting via text messages, police said.

The 10-year-old, a student at Cape Coral Patriot Elementary School, was handcuffed and boarded a police cruise on Saturday evening for threatening in writing to carry out a mass shooting.

“This student’s behavior is disgusting, especially after the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas,” Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in a statement. “Making sure our children are safe is paramount.”

The sheriff’s office’s school threat monitoring team was alerted to the alarming messages and the Youth Services Criminal Investigation Division soon took over the case, due to the child’s young age.

Marceno noted that officers quickly investigated the threats of mass shooting.

“We will have law and order in our schools! My team did not hesitate for a second … NOT A SECOND, to investigate this threat, “he said.

Officers who responded to the shooting at the school in Uvalde, Texas, which claimed the lives of 19 fourth-graders and two teachers, face a negative reaction for their delayed response. It took the police almost an hour to enter the classrooms where all the shootings took place and kill the gunman Salvador Ramos.

“Now is not the time to act like a criminal. It’s not funny. This kid made a fake threat, and now he’s experiencing real consequences,” said Sheriff Carmine Marceno.
