Former tennis star Jelena Dokic vows to “come back stronger than ever” after a day she will “never forget”

Former Australian tennis star Jelena Dokic has revealed that her mental health deteriorated so much earlier this year that she almost ended her life.

Ms Dokic, who has become a successful tennis commentator, posted on social media detailing a heartbreaking experience in April.

The former world number 4 shared her story on Instagram, accompanied by a selfie taken on April 28, a day she will “never forget.”

The 39-year-old says that seeking professional help has since “saved her life”.

“The last six months have been tough,” Dokic wrote. “It’s been a constant cry everywhere. From hiding in the bathroom when I work, wiping away my tears so no one can see, to the unstoppable crying at home within my four walls has been unbearable.

“The constant feelings of sadness and pain don’t go away and my life is shattered.

“I will not say that I am doing very well now, but I am definitely on the road to recovery.

“Some days are better than others and sometimes I take a step forward and then a step back, but I’m struggling and I think I can overcome it.

“I’ll be back stronger than ever.”

Ms. Dokic, who retired from the game in 2014, has been open about her past mental health struggles and. in his 2017 autobiography, Unbreakable, he revealed the physical and emotional abuse he suffered at the hands of his father.

Most recently, he announced his separation from his longtime partner, Tin Bikic.

Dokic’s latest release has garnered strong support from many great athletes, including Olympians Anna Meares, Giaan Rooney and Leisel Jones, and Australian tennis player Mark Philippoussis.

Australian Olympic cycling champion Meares wrote: “Enough is enough. You are worthy. Your pain will be healed. Be kind to yourself and if you can’t rely on those who can at the moment. We need you. We love you. You are not alone. You will find peace. Hold on. “

And on Twitter, the comments of French tennis player Alizé Cornet resurfaced following the revelation of Mrs. Dokic.
