Four inmates have escaped from a federal prison camp in Virginia, the latest in a growing trend of abandonment in low-security closures in the United States.
Prisoners Corey Branch, Tavares Lajuane Graham, Lamonte Rashawn Willis and Kareem Allen Shaw were found missing in the satellite camp of the Petersburg Federal Correctional Complex in Hopewell, Virginia, around 1:45 a.m. Federal Office of Prisons.
Officials did not disclose how the detainees escaped from the facility, which houses 185 men.
However, the BOP has been criticized in recent years for its lack of security in similar federal prison camps across the country, where doors are usually left open and security cameras do not work.
An internal investigation has been launched and reported to the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.
Branch, 41, is serving more than 13 years of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and possession of a firearm. Graham, 44, is serving 10 years on drug-related charges and possession of a firearm.
