Fourth case of smallpox monkey identified in New South Wales

Several days after arriving home in Sydney, two men in their 30s developed mild illnesses, and doctors determined “clinically compatible” symptoms of the virus.

“The results of urgent tests for one of the men are consistent with the smallpox of the monkey, making it the fourth case in NSW.

“His companion is likely to be confirmed as the fifth case,” NSW Health said in a statement.

The two men are isolated at home while the health department keeps track of contacts.

Investigations so far have not identified high-risk contacts in NSW and these new cases are unrelated to the three previously reported in the state.
