  • The McGowan government is launching a flu vaccination blitz ahead of the flu season
  • Free vaccines available at state clinics and pharmacies throughout the month
  • WA faces a potentially severe flu season after two years of low-key cases

Free flu vaccines will be available to all Western Australians during June, with the McGowan government announcing a flu attack ahead of the worst of the winter flu season.

The government announced today that it has been working with GP pharmacies to extend subsidized vaccines to all Western Australians during June, as an additional incentive for people to arm themselves against the flu.

“Free Jab June” will begin on June 1, 2022 and run through June 30, 2022.

Vaccines will be available throughout WA at state vaccination clinics in a “simple” manner and at participating pharmacies and GPs by reservation.

Information on the locations offering the free flu shot during June 2022 is available at rollupforwa.com.au

Currently, only certain cohorts of particularly vulnerable people are offered free influenza vaccinations, under existing state and Commonwealth vaccination programs.

People under the age of five, people over the age of 65, pregnant women, people at higher risk for flu complications and Aboriginal people aged six months or older are currently eligible for a free flu vaccine in the framework of the National Immunization Program.

The state’s free flu vaccination program includes elementary school children, the homeless, and residents in (shared) living settings such as disability care, mental health shelters, and housing for youth groups. , but will be extended to all Western Australians in June.

To date, more than 600,000 doses of the flu vaccine have been given in WA, with almost 20 per cent of Western Australians vaccinated.

In 2020, WA achieved its highest flu vaccine coverage by 37%.

The free flu vaccine blitz is based on the government’s campaign on the benefits of healthy hygiene, as well as vaccination against COVID-19 and the flu, to raise awareness in the WA community. You can find more information at

Comments attributed to Prime Minister Mark McGowan:

“The flu can cause serious illness and with COVID-19 still in our community, it is important that as many people as possible protect themselves from the flu.

“High numbers of cases are already being observed in the eastern states, and as of May 26, WA had reported 194 cases of influenza this year, with health officials concerned that we are on track for a potentially severe season.

“After two years of very low flu, I urge all Western Australians to roll in to protect themselves now before the worst winter.

“We have secured additional supplies of the vaccine, amid production constraints, to provide free vaccinations to all Western Australians during the month of June.

“Keeping Western Australians safe and sound is a priority for my government and ‘Free Jab June’ is another way to safeguard our community.”

Comments attributed to Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“Like COVID-19, the flu can make some people in our community very ill, and the best defense we have is vaccination.

“Our hospital staff is going further down the line due to COVID-19 and as winter approaches, we expect the pressure on our healthcare system to increase.

“I urge all Western Australians, for their own good, for their families and for the benefit of our healthcare workforce, to get vaccinated against the flu before the season arrives.

“We are already making vaccines free for our most vulnerable, but by extending this program throughout June we are making the flu vaccine easier for everyone to access.”
