Hugh Dixon scored a goal as brawls broke out and then quickly joined the action as fights broke out all over the ground.

Fremantle’s Caleb Serong and West Coasts’ Jack Redden were at the heart of the action as several players were left with torn guernseys.

“You saw it coming Pav and they’re all running to join the fray. No love lost. West Coast, the underdogs, have come with a fighting mentality and that’s here,” said commentator Adam Papalia.

“The refs are trying to get it under control so they can restart the game but they can’t,” Dermott Brereton added.

“Both teams are still fighting each other, there’s some life in it,” Papalia said.

Fremantle great Matthew Pavlich said Serong was simply “flying the flag” in the fight.

“Andy Brayshaw was being bullied by Jackson Nelson when he was coming out and he didn’t like it so it went back to him and exploded. Caleb Serong flagged in,” he said.

“A little spice in the Derby 55,” added Papalia.

The Eagles outscored their cross-town rivals in the opening period to hold a two-point lead after the first quarter.

A result doesn’t matter for the Eagles, for the Dockers, but the result would have a huge bearing on where they finish on the ladder.

Lose and the best chance is a fifth place finish. Win and keep their hopes of a double chance alive.

The Dockers responded in the second quarter and headed into the break with a slender four-point lead.
