Rafael Nadal sealed his 14th French Open title and his 22nd Grand Slam with a win over Casper Ruud at Roland Garros.
Rafael Nadal won his 14th French Open title and the 22nd Grand Slam which extended his record after beating Casper Ruud in Sunday’s final at Roland Garros.
The 36-year-old Spaniard showed all his years of experience in dismantling the Norwegian 6-3 6-3 6-0 on the Philippe Chatrier court.
Nadal, who has only lost three times at Roland Garros since his debut in 2005, is two days away from his 36th birthday and suffers from a chronic foot problem that has led to rumors of retirement.
But he sidelined eighth seed Ruud in his first competitive meeting to take him two ahead of big rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

It was a rude awakening for the underdog when he broke right away, and even though Nadal let him go with a loose set of service, the first set soon fell into the bag.
A double foul gave Ruud a break to estimate the 3-1 lead in the second, but he was unable to take the lead when Nadal plunged into the energy reserves to hit directly.
When a winner of the straight down the line to get to the seven point, Ruud shook his head desperately and quickly made a double foul to give Nadal a 2-0 lead.
Little went well for Norway’s first men’s individual Grand Slam finalist, and when he threw a single volley into the net, Nadal was two breaks away in the third.

In the end, it was a procession with ‘Viva España’ sounding from one side in the stands while Nadal added ‘fourteenth’ to the Australian Open which he won earlier this year.
