Google celebrates 15 years of Street View with a new camera

Street View is 15 years old today, and to celebrate, Google has added a way to view pre-mobile Street View images. The feature has been on the desktop since 2014, but is now debuting on iOS and Android.

When available, you’ll get a “Show Mode Dates” switch that will reveal all available Street View data for a particular location.

Google is making a big update to the way it captures Street View data for Google Maps with a new camera. Pictured below is a new modular system that weighs less than 15 pounds, and Google says it’s no bigger than a domestic cat. Being modular, you will be able to pick up accessories such as lidar scanners, when needed, and remove them when not.

The new camera can be mounted on any car with a roof rack and can be controlled with a mobile device. Previously, Google Street View cameras required a special type of car holder and elaborate processing equipment to operate.

The new camera (which really should have a name, just look at it) will allow Google to expand Street View to traditionally poorly mapped areas like the Amazon rainforest.

Google says the new camera will work, with the fun colors of Google, starting next year.

Finally, Street View Studio will allow users to upload 360 ° image streams to Google Maps quickly and massively.
