Google is filtering out a possible Pixel 7 Ultra smartphone

Google has already lifted the lid on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, but now the company has leaked a third Pixel premium smartphone, and it could be the most intriguing of all.

9to5Google discovered the reference to the mysterious device in the Google Open Source Project (AOSP) code. Includes mentions on the C10 “Cheetah” (Pixel 7 Pro), P10 “Panther” (Pixel 7), “Felix” and “Lynx” (the economical Pixel 7a and the folded delayed Pixel). The new device is the ‘G10’ and 9to5Google believes it may be a new flagship model.

“Yeah, we’re talking about what a potential Pixel Ultra could be,” says 9to5Google’s Damien Wilde.

Breaking down the device, Wilde claims that the code reveals that it works with a top-level display of 1440 x 3120 pixels with a refresh rate of 120 Hz measuring 71 x 155 mm (6.7-inch diagonal): these specifications match the Pixel 7 Pro. The difference is that while the AOSP code indicates that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will use the same Samsung display panels as last year’s models, the G10 uses a new panel made by BOE.

Also, while the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have excellent screens, they are not as bright as the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. So staying with them in 2022 leaves room for Google to add a new, superior model.

Little else is known about this new device. The AOSP code has not been linked to the second-generation “GS201” Tensor chip (codenamed Cloudripper) such as Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, which leaked this detail to the previous Android 13 beta code. While this pairing seems obvious, it leaves room for a version of the chip with higher timing (GS202?) If it really is an Ultra model and Google wants to differentiate itself.

All in all, we’ll have to wait for more details before we know if the foreboding of 9to5Google is correct. But knowing the tendency of Google to filter details in the code of Android and with a new beta version of Android 13 soon, my hunch is that we will not have to wait any longer.
