Google’s Android team is once again trying to convince Apple to adopt the RCS messaging standard and is using a Drake song to convey its point.
The company is channeling the Canadian rapper’s song Texts Go Green to complain about the long-standing phenomenon when iPhone users exchange messages with their Android counterparts.
This would no longer be the case if both mobile operating systems were running the same RCS standard, which Google argues offers higher resolution for photos, support for larger file sizes, and many other benefits.
Drake’s song is actually about the phenomenon in which one iPhone user prevents another from contacting them via iMessage, so the messages are green instead of blue. However, this did not stop Google from taking advantage of the new song in a “video explaining the lyrics” posted on Twitter.
“Android Texts Go Green’s song is really crazy, it refers to the phenomenon when an iPhone user blocks or sends text messages to someone who doesn’t have an iPhone,” says a voiceover. Either way, it’s pretty rough. If only some super-talented Apple tech team fixes that. Because this is a problem that only Apple can solve. They just have to adopt RCS, in fact. It would also make texting more secure. But I’m just saying a great clue. ”
Google’s sarcastic video is the company’s latest attempt to get Apple to adopt RCS messaging this year, with the company even calling it “harassment.”
Android executive Hiroshi Lockheimer said in January: “Blocking Apple’s iMessage is a documented strategy. Using peer pressure and bullying as a way to sell products is false for a company that “Humanity and equity are at the heart of our marketing. Standards exist today to address them.”
