Jays 9 Twin 3
This is a space holder for the abstract. Tom watched the game at the bar and is watching it on his phone. When Tom drinks, he refers to himself in the third person. Yes, it’s annoying.
Teoscar Hernández and Vlad hit a home run. And Bo was 3-for-5 hitting in the fifth.
Alek Manoah had a very good start.
I’ll fix it when I get home.
Manoah gave us 6 innings of work, allowing just 2 hits, but walked 4 and earned 2. And he got his 12th win of the season.
And we got an inning from Tim Mayza, Yimi Garcia, and freshman Jay Anthony Bass (who gave up a solo homer but then didn’t pitch anything that didn’t move, nice to see him, but I took a couple of beer by this point).
Offensively…well we struggled against Sonny Gray. He didn’t allow a run through 5 innings, although we loaded the bases in the fifth but Vlad went down to end the inning. I thought it wasn’t going to be our night.
But we got three runs in the sixth. Teoscar Hernandez singled to tie the game at one. After that, Bo Bichette doubled and Lourdes Gurriel singled him home. A single by Whit Merriefield brought in Lourdes (after an error by Carlos Correa moved him to third. Correa caught a drive by Matt Chapman and then threw wide to first in a futile attempt to double off Lourdes).
And then we got six more runs in the eighth:
- Bo doubled.
- Lourdes took him home.
- One out later Merrifield singled.
- Cavan Biggio popped a single that fell between third baseman Jose Miranda and left fielder Nick Gordon, Lourdes scored.
- Vlad then homered to make up for his outing with the bases loaded in the fifth. Suddenly we were up 9-2.
We had 13 hits and 6 walks. Bo had 3 hits, including 2 doubles. He looked a lot more relaxed at the plate tonight. Vlad, Lourdes, Whit and Cavan all had 2 hits. The only Jays no-hitters were Alejandro Kirk (who walked three) and Matt Chapman (who walked one).
Jays of the Day: Lourdes (.248 WPA), Tim Mayza (.106) and Bo (.091).
No one received the other award. Chapman had the low mark at -.065.
We have an 8:00 Eastern start tomorrow. Jose Berrios (8-4, 4.96) had a great July start for the Jays. Tyler Mahle (5-7, 4.40) starts for the Twins.
