Ingenius modders have discovered parts of the code for the beloved 2004 sci-fi classic, Half-Life 2, disguised in the Portal Companion collection that was recently released on Nintendo Switch. It’s still work in progress, but from there, a self-proclaimed “Switch Tinkerer” known as OatmealDome has gotten the game running, albeit with a few caveats.
“I’ve managed to load Half-Life 2 on the Switch version of Portal 1!” writes OatmealDome. “It works a bit: the game crashes from time to time, it’s impossible to advance on some maps, NPC animations have bugs, saves don’t work, and world cameras don’t generate properly.” continue. It’s worth noting that finding some leftover Half-Life 2 code isn’t entirely unexpected, as Portal was developed essentially as an extensive mod for the game, but it’s rare to find specific Half-Life 2, NPC models , sound notes and more, according to OatmealDome. .
Currently, OatmealDome is working hard to improve its mod, but we still hope that Valve will one day bring Half-Life 2 for the official release on Nintendo Switch someday.
