Lewis Hamilton hopes that over time George Russell will be able to take on the role of “guinea pig” in Mercedes, although he believes that the team as a whole should be more “more cautious” when experimenting with W13.
Mercedes has had a great time this season, with the current Constructors’ Championship struggling to unlock the potential of its new W13.
Between that and the eradication of the porpoise, the team has had to experience the race and the start with Hamilton unimpressed by driving his car after Friday’s practice in Montreal.
He complained that his overly rigid car was not “driveable” in his last stage in FP2, he had to give up a hot lap when he almost lost control.
He later described the session as a “disaster”, with the seven-time world champion adding that his car was “only getting worse”.
Two days later, however, he returned to the podium after finishing third in the Canadian Grand Prix with teammate Russell P4.
Enjoying the path to change, Hamilton would like to see Russell do more experiments now that he has adapted to life in Mercedes.

“Yeah, maybe in the second half of the season George can do the experiments!” Hamilton said.
“We’re just trying to work … we’re just trying to make progress as a team. especially if you only practice one and two dry and don’t get an FP3, for example.
“So yeah, I think there’s a lot of learning this weekend and improvements we can make going forward.
“But you know, it’s a very fast pace today. And it’s very nice to see it, it hasn’t always been the case I’ve had with this car, so it’s a pleasure to have a good battle with it today, she or he, like be called a car.
“And I really hope that moving to Silverstone … is such an important race for us and for me, so I hope that … I just want to be in a battle with these guys.
“In the end, when the security car came in and we started again, I was hoping to be able to … the dream was like I could keep fighting with them and find a way, but they were fast. But we’ll get there in the end. “.
Hamilton remains sixth in the Drivers’ Championship but reaches 77 points.
