A man who chased a tourist before stabbing him in the back recovered a larger knife from his car after the first one broke, according to a forensic court.
Ikram Bahram was shot dead by police after running into an officer with the largest weapon, a pre-investigation conference said on Monday.
The death of the 24-year-old – who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was being treated at the time of his death – will be the subject of an investigation in Brisbane early next year.

Bahram parked his car in the city of Brisbane after leaving his home in Munruben, south of Brisbane, around 9 am on February 23, 2020.
He pulled the knife out of a backpack on Mary Street, ran to the English tourist walking with his partner and then chased him, said the lawyer who helped Rhiannon Helsen.
“When they reached Edwards Street, Ikram attacked the tourist with a knife, stabbing him in the back and hitting him in the face before he could escape,” he added.
The knife broke during the attack.
Bahram retrieved a larger one from his car and returned to Mary Street where he was seen by police responding to the incident.
Ms Helsen said camera footage from the body showed Bahram running towards an officer with a knife in his right hand.
“When the officer walks away in an attempt to pull back and put some distance between him and Ikram, he asks him to drop the knife,” he added.
“When Ikram did not comply and continued to run towards the officer, a series of shots were fired which struck him.”
Bahram died at the scene.
A police investigation found that officers had complied with the policy and procedure.
Ms Helsen said the investigation would consider the circumstances that led to Bahram’s shooting, including his mental health treatment, if officers involved acting appropriately and if his training was sufficient.
It is expected to be held for three days in January in front of coroner Terry Ryan.
