On Wednesday, police identified the woman and the 7-year-old boy killed after a jet boat registered in New Jersey where they were going with 11 more family members capsized in the Hudson River.
Lindelia Vasquez, 47, and Julian Vasquez, 7, were trapped under the 27-foot ship, which capsized at around 2.45pm in front of the Intrepid Sea Museum, Air & Space at Pier 84 and 46th Street. tell the authorities.
A New York City police spokesman told NJ Advance Media that the ship was registered in New Jersey and that the victims who died were visiting from Colombia. “We don’t have them to have a U.S. address,” the police spokesman said.
The woman and child who died were among the 13 people on board the ship and were trapped underneath when the ship capsized, New York officials said during a news conference.
The woman and child were taken to various hospitals in New York City, where they were pronounced dead. The relationship of the victims between them was not immediately known, the police spokesman said.
Eleven more family members, aged between 19 and 53, were taken to hospitals in the area. The 24-year-old captain of the boat, who is from Elizabeth and was following the boat on a jet ski, was also injured, according to ABC7ny.com.
At least two of the 11 people rescued were in critical condition on Tuesday and the others were stable, authorities said in the briefing.
“(The boat) was rented by family and friends and was owned by an individual (who) was on a jet ski following the boat,” said New York City Police Deputy Chief Denis M. McCarthy. in the information session.
McCarthy said detectives are investigating the cause of the tragedy, including whether there were too many people on the boat when it capsized.
