Heather Watson crashes at Wimbledon losing to Jule Niemeier in the fourth round

Britain’s Heather Watson lost to Jule Niemeier in the fourth round at Wimbledon.

The British number four lost in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-4, to the 22-year-old German.

Previously, he had defeated Niemeier in his only previous meeting, earlier this season in Monterrey, in a final tiebreaker of seven.

It was a first set shot by Watson that hit the net in frustration after a volley failed to get the set point.

The British hopes were raised briefly when Watson broke with confidence to secure a 2-0 lead in the second set, but was unable to bounce back and made a double foul when Niemeier hit directly.

Two more double fouls in their next service game marked the end for Watson, as the German finished the victory in one hour and 17 minutes.

It was Watson’s best performance in any Grand Slam, but a place in the quarterfinals turned out to be beyond the 30-year-old.

Watson had dropped to 121st place in the world rankings and this year marked his 12th Wimbledon.

Until now he had played every day of the tournament.

Niemeier could have been without a seed, but the world number 97 beat seed number two Anett Kontaveit in the second round.

Earlier, the audience attended a parade of former champions such as Rod Laver, Billie Jean King, Bjorn Borg, Andy Murray and Roger Federer to celebrate the centenary of the central track.

Watson has also reached the third round of the women’s doubles along with Harriet Dart, courtesy of the win over Natela Dzalamidze and Aleksandra Krunic on Saturday.
