Concerns about the UK’s erratic weather will continue this week as heavy rain and thunderstorms lash much of the UK amid a spell of tropical and patchy conditions.
Showers coming in from the Atlantic will lash southern and eastern parts of the country on Sunday, which will also be warm and humid.
Forecasters say “tropical” conditions will continue into Wednesday, with temperatures reaching the high twenties.
Greg Dewhurst, a Met Office forecaster, told the PA news agency: “A changing picture will emerge over the next few days as it will be on the warm and wet side for many.
“Sunday morning looks cloudy, with outbreaks of rain in parts of Wales and central England, with heavy showers in southern and eastern England, including London, in the afternoon.
“Most of Scotland and Northern Ireland should remain relatively sunny and dry, while temperatures will rise to 27C in parts of England.
“It will be warm and muggy and there will be plenty of cloud as high pressure builds in on Monday, the day starts sunny and dry before turning wet and windy in parts of the north east and west of the UK” .
Temperatures in London and the south-east could rise to 29C on Tuesday, before turning sunnier and cooler from mid-week.
Mr Dewhurst continued: “It will feel very muggy, more at night, so expect an uncomfortable time to sleep, with temperatures in the late teens.”
He said an area of ”tropical maritime air” moving in from the south-west will hang over the UK for the next few days.
Another forecaster earlier told PA that “a strange rumble of thunder can be heard in isolated areas.”
