Sunday, June 5, 2022, 11:24 am – An unstable pattern will bring much-needed rain to the southern half of Alberta this week.
Alberta will see relief from persistent dry conditions across the province over the next few days.
Scattered showers will persist during Monday, with possible snow and mixed rainfall near the mountain tops.
Calgary receives about 94 mm of rain in a typical June. With 30-50 mm of rain in addition to the forecast for parts of the Calgary metropolitan area, we are seeing more than half a month of rain that will fall in just a couple of days.
Meteorologists warn that there is ample potential for storms on Monday. The main threats associated with these storms are strong gusts of wind and small hail.
Widespread totals of 20-50 mm of rain are expected from the elbow region to the southeast corner of the province. Most of the rain will remain south of Edmonton, where less than 10 mm of rain is expected.

Rainfall in the prairies has been a story of all or nothing for the past two months. While the people of Manitoba cannot rest from the persistent flooding, it has been difficult to get much rain in the west recently.
Much of southern Alberta has seen less than half of its normal rainfall over the past 90 days. This next round of constant rain will help wet the soil and begin to reverse some of the damage caused by this prolonged drought.
The drought has increased the risk of fire in much of the region. Be alert for possible evacuation warnings if you are in southern Alberta or southern Saskatchewan. Officials ordered an evacuation Friday due to a wildfire burning north of Crimson Lake in Clearwater County.
Towards the end of the week, warmer temperatures and drier conditions will arrive and persist over the next weekend.
