Helping Hands moves to a larger, safer location (4 photos)

“I feel like I just won the lottery and I didn’t even buy a ticket,” says Helping Hands founder Wendy Gutcher.

Helping Hands is delighted to start offering services from its new home on Wellington Street West.

After facing limited space constraints and numerous violations at its former Gore Street location, volunteers from one of Sault’s largest nonprofits couldn’t be happier moving to a new installation.

The former Steelton Chapel at 346 Wellington St. W. will provide Helping Hands with a considerable amount of additional space so that they can continue to meet the growing demands of the community.

The move was very long for Helping Hands founder Wendy Gutcher and her team, and she is more than grateful for this new opportunity.

“I feel like I just won the lottery and I didn’t even buy a ticket,” he said. “Without the community, Helping Hands would never be so successful.”

Gutcher says that in addition to the work they are already doing for the less fortunate, he is looking forward to organizing events now that they have more space.

The new location will soon include a basement, which Gutcher says opens the door to a variety of fundraising possibilities, such as pancake breakfasts, pasta dinners, bingo and even barbecues outside.

Gutcher started the initiative from home in 2013, building the service from the ground up to what it is today.

For the past nine years, Helping Hands has been collecting, organizing, and providing the most needed free items such as clothing, household items, and other essentials.

Free on-site parking is available and public access to the store is available at the front of the building, while donation delivery is at the rear.

Helping Hands is looking for volunteers during the summer, and there are also two vacancies on the board.

Interested candidates are encouraged to resubmit their resumes to ssmhhboard@gmail.com, and those wishing to volunteer can contact Gutcher at 705-943-8363.
