Here’s what Marvel’s Midnight Suns card-based fight looks like

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is shaping up to be a very interesting twist on superhero games. While most of the major adaptations of comic book watchers are usually third-person action adventures, developer Firaxis is taking a new look. As you can see in the previous Game Informer video game, it’s closer to a turn-based role-playing game, with your available moves represented by cards.

Now, cards and building fights tend to keep people away, but it seems to work quite effectively here. Instead of a fixed set of commands for each character, Midnight Suns gives you a handful of randomly drawn cards, which means you’ll have to be adaptable and think about your feet to get over the bad guys. Each hero brings different opportunities; Spider-Man can trace enemies to keep them from moving during a turn, while Magik can send the bad guys flying through portals. Looks like you can find some great skill combinations, depending on who joins the battle.

The studio is known for the latest XCOM games, but that also wants to deviate from this formula. There is no cover, although there are many environmental objects to take advantage of, and you can’t move all the characters in one turn, while all the attacks will always land, here are no percentages. It seems to have a lot of potential while being more accessible to casual Marvel fans.

What’s more interesting is Game Informer’s discussion of the Abbey, the center you visit between missions. Play as a new hero, The Hunter, and you will be able to establish relationships with the characters you like by spending time with them. There seems to be a lot to do in this central area, with some parts locked until you have the necessary powers unlocked. Watch the full video above for more information.

We’re pretty impressed with what we’re hearing about this game, but what about you? How do you feel about Marvel’s Midnight Suns after watching this game? Tell us in the comments section below.
