HMCS Oriole will dock in Sault over Canada Day weekend

The HMCS Oriole, the Royal Canadian Navy’s sailing training vessel, will be at Roberta Bondar’s dock during the long Canada Day weekend.

The public is invited to tour the boat from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from July 1-3.

The stay in Sault Ste. Marie is part of a Great Lakes deployment for community outreach and recruitment for the Royal Canadian Navy.

HMCS Oriole, the Royal Canadian Navy’s sailing training vessel will be alongside Sault Ste. Marie will dock at Roberta Bondar Pier from 1 to 3 July 2022. The public can visit the boat from 10:00 to 16:00 every day.

Oriole is participating in the Great Lakes Deployment 2022 (GLD) which will see the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) visiting communities along the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes. GLD offers Canadians a unique opportunity to tour one of Canada’s naval ships and learn about life in the Royal Canadian Navy with our sailors.

It also offers the opportunity to speak with our navigators and recruiters to learn more about a career at RCN. Or, if you already have an application submitted online, you can come and see the RCN in person for more information about your future career at the RCN.

The HMCS Oriole is the Royal Canadian Navy’s sailing training vessel, the public outreach vessel and the longest commissioned vessel. The Oriole was built for the Gooderham family and launched in 1921. During World War II, the ship was ceded to the Navy for training purposes, and later put into service in 1954 with headquarters. in Esquimalt, BC. In 2017, the Oriole sailed down the Panama Canal and back to Halifax where it is now parked. Oriole has served continuously since 1921 in both private and military positions, and this year celebrates 101 years of service.
