How easy is it for you to access an abortion center if you need one?
For some, it’s not at all easy. A public database published in 2021 showed that several people across the country have to travel more than 100 miles to reach an abortion center.
However, this data is a snapshot in time. Access to abortion is expected to change dramatically thanks to Friday’s cancellation of Roe Vs. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court.
In at least four counties in Pennsylvania, women must travel more than 100 miles to reach the nearest facility. In the case of two of these counties, Clinton and Elk, these facilities are located in New York State. Opponents of abortion in Pennsylvania are trying to repeal statewide laws.
The Myers Abortion Facility database uses public data to estimate travel time and distance to the nearest U.S. abortion provider by county. This includes private doctors, hospitals and independent clinics. It does. These data are current as of June 2021 and date back to 2009.

It is estimated that 20.5 percent of women were prevented from seeking an abortion because of these factors, wrote Caitlin Myers, who compiled the database for a research paper studying the problem.
“For many women seeking abortion, the travel distances that may seem modest to some observers pose insurmountable obstacles,” Myers wrote.
A 2020 article published by the National Library of Medicine stated that being 30 miles or more from access to abortion would cause abortion rates to drop because distance was a barrier to care.
An analysis of Axios in December showed that with a possible turnover of Roe vs. Wade, access to the nearest abortion provider would increase to an average of 125 miles versus an average of 25 miles, which is what Myers ’database showed from the past. course.
