Change is scary and we don’t like it. Everything should stay as it is now, so we know how it works and how to use it. When a company like Twitter gets around to changing the sound that plays when you refresh your feed, all hell breaks loose. I’m not exaggerating here. I know you feel the same way. If you want to stop hearing that robotic beep every time you search for new tweets, you can turn the sound off permanently.
Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit. I personally don’t mind the new double blip: a robotic chirp that activates when you swipe down to refresh a page, and a second blip that plays when Twitter has finished refreshing. That said, it makes me lose the old sound, but unfortunately there is no way to get it back.
According to The Verge, Twitter has been slowly rolling out this new sound to iOS and Android over the past few weeks. The Verge staff didn’t notice until July 14, but pointed to tweets since July 4 questioning the updated whistle. Sound has supposedly rolled out faster on iOS than Android, but I have it on both platforms. That said, only the second sound can be heard on my Pixel – so far, Twitter doesn’t make a sound the first time I go down to update a feed.
How to turn off the new Twitter update sound
Mute is easy. Of course, it won’t play if your iPhone or Android device is on silent, as all system sounds are disabled when your phone is on silent or on vibrate. On the iPhone, this is as easy as flipping the mute switch to silent mode. On Android, press one of the volume buttons to open the volume controls, tap “Trona,” then tap “Vibrate” or “Mute.”

55 inch LG Oled Smart TV
Apart from being 55″ in size, this OLED TV has over 8 million pixels for truly stunning images, incredible black depth and vibrant colors, uses an a7 Gen 4 AI processor for 4K images, has a latency download if you’re looking for a good gaming TV, and it even has Google Assistant and Alexa built in.
This method only works when the entire phone is on silent. If you like to keep the sound on but don’t want to hear the new Twitter ringtone, you can just turn off the sounds for the Twitter app. To get started, swipe right on the Twitter home screen to reveal the side menu, then tap Settings & Privacy. Tap Accessibility, Display & Languages, then choose Display & Sound (iOS) or Display (Android). Now, turn off the toggle next to “Sound Effects” and you’ll never hear the new Twitter update sound again. Finally, you can drift off in peace, with only the sound of your anxious heartbeat pounding in your ears.
