Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she has “nothing to apologize for” in her handling of Russia during her 16 years in office.
In her first major interview since leaving office, Ms Merkel denied a suggestion that she and other people appeased Russian President Vladimir Putin, which eventually led to the invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking at the Berliner Ensemble with German journalist Alexander Osang, he said: “I tried to work to avoid the calamity, and diplomacy was not wrong if it was not successful.
