Instagram stories seem to be misbehaving for some users, so they need to see all of someone’s stories again before they can see new ones. The problem has affected several Virgo staff members since yesterday, and some Reddit users have reported that the same thing is happening to them.
Meta spokeswoman Christine Pai told The Verge in an email that the company is “aware that some people have trouble accessing Instagram stories.” Dad said Instagram is “working to get things back to normal as soon as possible” and apologizes for the inconvenience.
The root problem seems to be that Instagram doesn’t remember where you left off when you saw someone’s stories. For example, if one of my friends has posted five stories and I look at four before I swipe my finger, the next time I touch their icon, I should see their fifth story. Instead, Instagram is currently bringing me back to the four I’ve already seen every time I go to see the story. The problem also arises when someone posts a new story to their feed.
It is currently unknown how many users are affected. There are a lot of people on Twitter who report that they have to look at the stories again, but Instagram is not a trend as I would expect if an important feature of this was broken for everyone.
